Roberts, Jr., 80, of St. Simons Island, died Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick, GA. Mr. Roberts was a native of Atkinson County. He is survived by four children, Gail Miller (Mitch) of Dumas, AR. Sam M. Roberts, III (Martha) of Brunswick, GA and Tim Roberts (Lynda) of Hortense, GA; four sisters, Doris Roberts Wilson Taylor of Douglas, GA, Ophelia Alene O'Brien of St Simons Island, GA, Joan Elizabeth Adams of Blue Ridge, GA; Kathryn Leveda Mizell of Mineral Bluff, GA; five grandchildren, Mitch Miller, Jr; Matthew Samuel Miller, Corey Miller, Richard Willis, Jr and Raine Roberts, 8 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews; his beloved and devoted friend of many years, Lucille Higdon. He is predeceased by his best friend, Jack Hart. Mr. Roberts moved his young family to Brunswick in the mid-1950s. His first job was with F.M. Bowen Contracting. He was proud to have worked on the Liberty shop with his father at the shipyards in Brunswick. Mrs. Roberts was a masonry contractor who owned and operated Roberts Masonry and Tabby Industries for over 40 years in southeast Georgia, north Florida and various location throughout the United States. He laid the cornerstone for the original hospital on Parkwood and also laid the last brick on the last house built on Jekyll Island. He build the Aquarama on Jekyll as well as multiple churches, businesses and homes on just a handshake. Mr. Roberts built and was a member of Arco Methodist Church. He was on the board of the John Travis Hart Foundation as Co-Executor; part of the original Sea Island 6 (Sea Six), twice past president of The Lions Club, former president of the Builders Association, and Lifetime member of Satilla Masonic Lodge. During Jimmy Carter's term as governor he appointed Mr. Roberts the Colonel of State Militia. Visitation will be held Friday, July 25, 2008 from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. Funeral services was held Saturday, July 26, 2008 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Edo Miller with the Reverend Earl Parrish officiating. Interment will be at 3 p.m. at Antioch Cemetery, Kirkland, GA. Pallbearers were Mitch Miller, Jr., Matthew Millet, Corey Miller, Richard Willis, Jr., Roger Wilson, Jimmy Wilson. Honorary pallbearers were Tom Shirling, E.V. Poppell, Jr., Tom Lowe, Dr. Joe Owens, Dr. Wade Strickland, Dr. Herman Levy, Melvin Lewis Davis, Russell Higdon.
