Stubbs, age 85, of Axson, GA, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2009 at Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross, GA following an extended illness. A native of Brantley Co., Mr. Stubbs was born February 6, 1924, son of Harley and Annie Bertha Pinholster Stubbs. He was a long time resident of Atkinson County before moving to Baptist Village Retirement Community in Waycross, GA. He was a retired lineman of Southern Bell Co. and a WWII Veteran of the U.S. Navy. Mr. Stubbs was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Arnold Stubbs, 4 brothers and 3 sisters. Survivors include, nieces, Alice Faye Davis of Axson, GA, Madlyn Joyner of Jacksonville, FL and Jeanette Gilbert of Jackson, MS; great nieces, Donna Corbitt of Axson, GA, Dyanne Joyner of Jacksonville, FL, Mauria Disharoon of Axson, GA, Susan Garrett of Axson, GA, Sandra Gail Joyner of Jacksonville, FL and Cheryl Winters of Axson, GA; Nephew, Colin Smith of Axson, GA and great nephew, Wayne Joyner of Jacksonville, FL. Numerous other nieces and nephews also survive Mr. Stubbs. Funeral services for Mr. Stubbs were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Rev. William Pope and Rev. Charlie Dunn officiating. Special musical selections included "How Great Thou Art" rendered by soloist Mark Corbitt with tape accompaniment and "Amazing Grace" rendered accappella by soloist, Mark Corbitt. Soft music for the Prelude and Postlude was provided by Patricia Corbitt, pianist. The interment followed in Mt. Zion Cemetery. Serving as active pallbearers were Scott Davis, Keith Disharoon, Wayne Joyner, Rick Disharoon, Shane Thomas and Glen Garrett. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Colin Smith, Stanley Mizell, Al Guise and Alex Lang. Relihan Funeral Home of Pearson, GA was in charge of the arrangements.
