R. Summerlin age 77 of Axson, GA passed away Wednesday, November 10, 2004 at Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross, GA following an extended illness. A native of Atkinson Co., Mr. Summerlin was born May 8, 1927 son of Willie and Lucy Guthrie Summerlin. He was retired high-rise construction foreman for McDevitt and Street Construction Co. and a member and a deacon of Refuge Primitive Baptist Church. Mr. Summerlin was a member of American Legion Post 173, former board member of the Atkinson SWMA and the Farm Service Agency where he served as board chairman. He was also a WWII veteran having served in the Merchant Marines and was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include wife, Mary Margaret Delk Summerlin of Axson, GA, 1 son, Richard Summerlin and wife Julie of Portland, OR; 2 brothers, S.A. Summerlin of Pearson, GA, Henry Summerlin of Savannah, GA; 2 sisters, Jessie Nell Faulk of Palatka, FL, Opal Hughes of Cope, SC; 3 grandchildren Donald Summerlin, Austin Summerlin and Charity Elizabeth Summerlin; 1 great granddaughter, Savannah Grace Summerlin, several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services Mr. Summerlin were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004 at Refuge Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Alvin Johnson officiating. Special musical selections included "Land of Rest," "Christ the Chiefest Among Ten Thousand," "We Shall Sleep But Not Forever" and "Minister's Farewell" rendered by the Primitive Baptist Church Singers. The interment followed in Sweetwater Cemetery. Serving as active pallbearers were Denny Summerlin, Sol Summerlin, Mike Summerlin, Lynn Hughes, Chris Hughes, Clint Summerlin, Nancy Corbitt and Stewart "Peanut" Delk.
