Mr. Taft, a native of Atkinson Co., GA, was born November 14, 1936, son of the late Johnnie, Sr. & Emma Douglas Taft. He was a retired construction work superintendent from Armco Steel & a Veteran of the US Army. He was a former chairman of the Board of Commissioners of Atkinson County, GA. Survivors are, wife, Frances Janelle Guthrie Taft, Pearson, GA; son, Jack, Jr. (Teresa) Taft, New Egypt, NJ; sisters, Ann Laura (Dick) Hughes, Springfield, IL, Wilma (A.K.) Giddens, Waycross, GA and Elsie (Harold) Parrish, Sanford, FL; brother, Johnnie, Jr. (Dorothy) Taft, Pearson, GA, several nieces and nephews. Brother, Carlton Taft preceded him in death. Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 18, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the Sunnyside Baptist Church with Rev. Sim Youngblood officiating. The congregation sang, "Precious Memories" and "Amazing Grace" with Margaret Williams, pianist. Burial followed in the Sunnyside Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Billy Giddens, Johnny Robert Taft, Perry Gene McNeal, Herschel Smith, Greg Carter and Clifford Taft. Honorary pallbearers, Chester Brown, D.B. Morris, Henry McKinnon, Dougal Gillis, William White, Jack Keaton and Jerry Metts. Sims Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
