A native of Atkinson County, Mr. Taft was born May 23, 1929, son of Johnnie and Emma Douglas Taft, Sr. He was a retired scale operator for Del Cook Lumber Company. Mr. Taft was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and was an avid fox hunter. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jacob McKinnon and 2 brothers, Jack Taft and Carlton Taft. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Taft of Pearson, GA; son, Johnny Robert Taft and wife Debbie of Townsend, GA; two daughters, Patricia Sirmans and husband, Joey of Byron, GA and Janice McKinnon and husband, Dougie of Pearson, GA; three sisters, Wilma Giddens and husband, A.L. of Waycross, GA. Elsie Parrish and husband Harold of Sanford, FL and Ann Hughes and husband Dick of Springfield, IL and sister-in-law, Jenelle Taft of Pearson, GA. Nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Taft were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 14, 2006 at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Lonnie Spikes, Rev. Sim Youngblood and Bro Casey Wright officiating. Special musical selections included, "This Is Just What Heaven Means To Me" rendered by Al Williams, Odessa Taft, Laverne Summerlin and Lorraine McGovern with Margaret Williams accompanying at the piano, "Power In Prayer" rendered by Angie Dixon with taped accompaniment and "Precious Memories" rendered by the congregation with Angie Dixon accompanying at the piano. Soft music for the prelude and postlude was provided by Angie Dixon, pianist. The interment followed in Sunnyside Cemetery. Service as active pallbearers were Derrick McKinnon, Casey Wright, Jody Mitchell, Jody Sirmans, Carlton Taft, Jack Taft, Jr., Russell Hulbert, Randy Tucker.
