Mrs. Tanner was a native and life long resident of Atkinson County. She was a devoted homemaker of the Stokesville Community. She was the daughter of the late W.R. "Bud" Guthrie and the late Charity Frances Vickers Guthrie, and the wife of the late T.J. "Tom" Tanner. Mrs. Tanner was a member of the Stokesville Baptist Church. Survivors include, 3 daughters, Jane T. Vincent, Bonnie T. Griffis and Elva T. Butler, all of Axson, GA; sons, Ralph Tanner, Ben Tanner and Jonathan Tanner, all of Axson, GA; 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great- grandchildren. Several nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 29, 2004 at 3 p.m. at the Stokesville Baptist Church, with Rev. Bob Pierce, Rev. Edgar Musgrove and Rev. Theron Long officiating. The interment followed in the Stokesville Church Cemetery with Rev. Gregory Pope conducting the graveside services. Active pallbearers were, Greg Griffis, Benji Tanner, Tom Tanner, Jeremy Johns, Jed Vickers, Taylor Morgan, Tommy Guthrie, and Wade Tanner. Honorary pallbearers were, S.A. Summerlin, Sammy Guthrie, Jess Tanner, Hiram Tanner, Jr., Ed Gillis, David Spivey, David Batchelor, Adair Tanner, Wilmont Pierce, Cedric Sweat, Jimmy Call and Jesse McKinnon. Special musical selections, "Amazing Grace," and "It Is Well With My Soul," were rendered by the congregation with June Tanner at the piano. At the grave site "In The Sweet Bye and Bye," was presented acapella by the soloist and granddaughter, Amy Johns. Prelude and postlude were soft selections by the pianist, Patti Spivey.
