Born September 4, 1949, in Douglas, GA, Mr. Tanner was the son of Hasting and Connie McKinnon Tanner. He was a 1967 graduate of Atkinson County High School. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and after being discharged he went to work with the Georgia Forestry Commission as a forest ranger for 20 years, retiring in 1993. He loved to work with wood and also enjoyed collecting guns and coins. His church membership was at Kirkland United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Hasting Tanner and a brother, Quincy Dewayne Tanner. Survivors include: mother, Connie McKinnon Tanner of Pearson, GA; faithful companion, Joann Harper of Pearson, GA; daughter, Carrie Tanner and husband Bryon of Douglas, GA; 2 sons, Chad Tanner and wife Michelle of Pearson, GA and Brandon Tanner of Pearson, GA; grandchildren, Laken and Hasting Tanner of Willacoochee, GA, Lauren and Blake Tanner of Douglas, GA, and Camryn Tanner of Pearson, GA; niece, Autumn Hillis and husband Kyle of Murphysboro, TN; extended family includes, Crystall Harper, Megan Sutton, Courtney Sutton, Kayley Sutton all of Pearson, GA and Josie Harper, Keith Harper and Deacon Harper all of Rebecca, GA. Funeral services for Mr. Tanner were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 31, 2013, at Kirkland United Methodist Church with Rev. Edward Mathews officiating. Special music selections “There Will be a Day” and “Praise You in the Storm” were rendered by CD, Soft music for the prelude and the postlude was provided by Margaret Williams pianist. Interment followed in Satilla Memorial Gardens. Serving as active pallbearers were Bryon Tanner, Lee Pittman, Brian Mizell, Locke Tanner, Neal Dillingham, Reid Dillingham. Honorary pallbearers were Q.D. Dillingham, Steve Corbitt, H.F. Mizell, Bill King, Johnny Tanner, Henry Moore. Relihan Funeral Home of Pearson, GA was in charge of the arrangements.
