The Atkinson County Citizen - September 13, 2007
Mr. John Leon Thigpen, age 84, of Waycross, Ga., formerly of Atkinson Co., 
passed away Thursday, September 6, 2007, at Waycross Health and Rehabilitation 
Center in Waycross, GA. following an extended illness.
 A native of Atkinson County, Mr. Thigpen was born August 12, 1923 son of 
James Andrew and Sarah Rebecca Burch Thigpen. He had made his home in 
Waycross, GA for most of his life. Mr. Thigpen was a U.S. Army veteran of 
WWII, a self employed Real Estate Agent, an ordained Baptist minister and was 
a member of New Haven Baptist Church.
 Survivors include his wife, Emma Lee Thigpen of Waycross, GA; one brother, 
James Thigpen of Waycross, GA; and one sister, Emma Gilliard of Douglas, GA. 
Several nieces and nephews also survive.
 Funeral services for Mr. Thigpen were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 8, 
2007 at Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Pearson, GA with Rev. 
Clayton Davis, Rev. J. D. Herndon and Rev. Edwin Gilliard officiating. Special 
musical selections included, "I Saw the Light," rendered by Mt. Pleasant 
Church Choir with Dorsey Thigpen accompanying at the piano. Soft music for the 
Prelude and Postlude was provided by Dorsey Thigpen, pianist. The interment 
followed at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
 Relihan Funeral Home of Pearson, GA was in charge of the arrangements.
