Born March 11, 1928 in Coffee County, Mrs. Thigpen was the daughter of Bartow and Ava Lee Mathis Rowell. She had made her home in Waycross for many years. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband John Leon Thigpen, son, Hilton Taylor, daughter, Aljean Forsyth Bailey, twin granddaughters, brothers, W.P Rowell, Huey Rowell, Cleon Rowell, and sisters, Maxine Harper and Rose Ann Rowell. Survivors include brother, Wilbert Rowell and wife Myreeah of Douglas, GA; 2 sisters, Evelyn Thigpen of Pearson, GA and Laveen Lee and husband Ronnie of Alma, GA; son in law, Mike Forsyth and wife Libby of Douglas, GA; grandson, Tony Forsyth of Atlanta, GA; granddaughter, Michelle Forsyth of Atlanta, GA; 2 great granddaughters; brother in law, Clifford Harper (Maxine deceased) of Douglas, GA; many close nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Funeral services for Mrs. Thigpen were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Clayton Davis officiating. Her sister Laveen Lee gave the eulogy. Special musical selections "For Those Tears I Die" and "Stand Still" were rendered by soloist Kandy Thrift with tape accompaniment. The interment followed in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Serving as active pallbearers were Jesse Thigpen, Ben Snipes, Greg Rowell, Kevin Rowell, Ron Lee, Kevin Harper. All attending the service were considered honorary pallbearers.
