Harrison. She was born 7 February 1807 in North Carolina the daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Stanley) West. Frances was living in Baldwin County, Georgia when she met and married George W. Harrison. They moved to Randolph County, Georgia early in their marriage and remained there until moving back to Milledgeville, Baldwin County, Georgia when her husband was elected Secretary of State. Milledgeville was then the Capitol of Georgia. Only four years later George died leaving Frances with six young children to raise. She did this by turning her home, across the street from the Capitol, into a boarding house. Education was very important to Frances and she saw that all her children were educated, even the girls, either through "higher" education or apprenticeships. She did well in this endeavor as all of her children achieved in their varied fields and were later recognized by their peers, communities, counties and state. She taught them to be "good citizens" of this new country, new state, new city and they learned well. In her 94 years she was able to see the results of her early labors. She was a strongly religious woman of strong character with many friends and close family. Frances saw her family through the years before, during and after the War Between the States. Following that War she and her family moved to Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia where they became involved with the reconstruction of that city and the state of Georgia. Her sons were, John Thomas Harrison, the only son to be in the regular confederate army; Zadok Daniel Harrison, Clerk of the Georgia Supreme Court for 60 years; James Polk Harrison was part owner of the Franklin Steam Printing House in Atlanta and owner of The Christian Index; youngest son, George Washington Harrison was well known and respected in the publishing circles of Atlanta and Georgia as was his older brother. He became owner of The Harrison Printing Company, state printers in Atlanta. Her daughters were, Georgia Harrison who married Alexander Wallace Starke of Virginia. He was a lawyer, printer and Alabama politician. She became a teacher in Atlanta after his death. Daughter Nora married E. Y. Clarke, one-time owner and Editor of the Atlanta Constitution. Nora was an accomplished pianist. Frances West Harrison died in 1901 in Atlanta, Georgia. She was taken "home" to Milledgeville to rest beside her husband and son, John Thomas, in Historic Memory Hill Cemetery. She was indeed a pioneer woman!
