Old Midway Cemetery Inscriptions Baldwin County, GA (Later called Talmage Cemetery) Baldwin County, Georgia Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by Carolyn Ramsay (EDGRADY@compuzone.net) DIRECTIONS Leave Milledgeville on 441 (used to be Irwinton Road). Turn right into Allen Memorial Road. Take Irby Street, right turn, after crossing bridge. Cemetery is in the woods across from the dumpster. The first row of graves is on the West side of the cemetery, running South to North, and the last of the ten rows of graves is on the East side of the cemetery. The graves on each row are numbered from left to right, that is: the row runs South to North. This cemetery served Oglethorpe Univ. when it was located in this area, before the university was moved to Atlanta. Row 1 (Headstone) Sacred to the memory of Mrs. Mae Smith, who departed this life the 22nd of May 1843, on the 67th year of her age. She died as she had lived, a humble believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. Graves 2nd through 12: Eleven C.S.A. headstones. Confederate soldiers who died at Old Oglethorpe Univ. which was used as a hospital for soldiers during the War Between the States; names unknown. Row 2. (Inside iron fence) (Vault) Mrs. Ruth Talmage, consort of Rev. S. K. Talmage, D.D., 1816-1891. Nothing but Jesus. 2. (Vault inside iron fence with grave 1) In memory of Rev. Samuel K. Talmage, D.D., for more than 20 years President of Oglethorpe Univ., died Sept. 2, 1865, aged 67 yrs. How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings that publisheth peace. 3. (Headstone) Sacred to the memory of Mathew E. Bingham, a member of the Junior Class of Oglethorpe Univ., who departed this life on the 20th of October Anno Domini 1851. AE 19 yrs, 11 mos. and 15 da. His dying testimony was, "To me to live is Christ and to die is gain." (Footstone) M.E.B. 4. (Headstone) John H. McMillan, born in Monroe Co., Ala., May 23, 1839, died October 12th, 1857, aged 18 yrs., 4 months and 19 days. A lovely youth of great promise and with an insatiable thirst for knowledge, he stood at the entrance of college life, but the death messenger called him away. "All ages are thine own, O. Death." Ramsay) (2) Adult (3) Adult One of the unmarked graves in this square is Professor Randolph H. Ramsay; one is that of his wife, Mary Ann Munro (possible variant spelling -- Monroe) Cleghorn Ramsay and one is that of his daughter, Miss Mary Ann Ramsay. The other two are unknown, but may include his son Henry Clay Ramsay. 2. (Square with low brick coping around it) Total Remains (in this square): (1) (Headstone) Louise. Monument (In center of square) West side: Louise, consort of C. W. Lane, died at Americus, July 9th, 1854, AE 30 yrs. East side: A. E.
