COMPTON Born September 13, 1810, in Jasper County, Georgia, Pleasant Compton, on reaching his maturity, moved to the county of Butts, Georgia, where he located in the town of Jackson and engaged in a mercantile business. While representing his county, as a Whig, in the Georgia Legislature, in 1840, he was elected by that body Surveyer General of the state, an important and lucrative office. He then moved to Milledgeville, the capital of the State. He held this office for ten years. His excellent business qualifications and habits, high character and genial manners, made him one of the best known public men of the State. He was afterwards, for more than thirty years, an active business man of Milledgeville, and died March 19, 1890, nearly eighty years of age.
