Gumm served as a soldier in the Creek and Mexican Wars. On August 18, 1916, the Nancy Hart Chapter D. A. R. of Milledgevile had touching and appropriate exercises at the marking of the grave of this hero. The slab was furnished by the government, in recognition of his many services. He helped to organize Baldwin County and to lay off the town of Milledgeville. His father, Jacob Gumm, was a native of Virginia and of sturdy German stock. He was one of the early settlers of the colony of Virginia, a man of wealth and prominence. His mother was a daughter of an English nobleman. His father gave his life fighting for liberty in the early years of the Revolution. Jacob the second, then a mere lad, entered the army to avenge his father's death and to help in the struggle for liberty. While in command at Fort Wilkinson, he heard of a young lady of North Carolina, Miss Katherine Hightower, who was visiting near the Fort. She proved to be one whom he had met in North Carolina and who had ministered to the soldiers and of whom he said, "Some day I intend to try to win that lady for a wife." And his wife she eventually became. Additional Comments: From: Part V HISTORY of BALDWIN COUNTY GEORGIA BY MRS. ANNA MARIA GREEN COOK ILLUSTRATED ANDERSON. S. C.
