Margaret McDowell Stribling Sleeper was born Jan. 2, 1793 in Milledgeville, 
Baldwin County, Georgia and died Jan. 21, 1864 in Liberty, Amite County, 
Mississippi. She is buried in the Sleeper Cemetery of Amite County with her 
first husband, Taliaferro Stribling, and her second husband, Gideon Sleeper 
(Apr. 5, 1786-Sept. 7, 1838).

Margaret McDowell was born on January 2, 1793 in Milledgeville, Georgia, the 
daughter of John McDowell (1747-1835) and Martha Fairburne McDowell (born 
1758). 

Her father, John McDowell, was a veteran of the American Revolution, and he 
died on July 18, 1835 in Liberty, Amite County, Mississippi. He is listed as 
being buried in the Sleeper Cemetery.

According to the History of the Sleeper Family of Waco and McLennan County, 
Texas by John Sleeper in 1930:

Gideon Sleeper married Mrs. Margaret [McDowell] Stribling in 1824. By this 
marriage, they had: 

Gardner Southworth Sleeper, 
Fabius Hoyt Sleeper, 
Louis C. Sleeper, 
Martha Sleeper, 
Clorinda Sleeper, 
Julia Sleeper, and 
Arminda Sleeper.

This small book contains biographical sketches and lists of known descendants 
for Gardner Southworth Sleeper, Clorinda Sleeper Morgan, and Fabius Hoyt 
Sleeper who moved to McLennan County, Texas in the 19th century. Many family 
members are buried in the Oakwood Cemetery of Waco.
