Biographical Sketches B. P. Brown, Jr. Benjamin P. Brown, Jr., the present Ordinary of Stephens county, was born in Banks county, this State, Dec. 15, 1862, and in point of age is one of Toccoa’s oldest residents. He was raised on the farm, educated in the county schools and in a North Carolina school. When a young man Mr. Brown chose a business career, and came to Toccoa and engaged in the mercantile business up to the time of his election. When the movement for creating Stephens county was launched he identified himself with it, and after the Legislature passed the bill establishing the new county, he offered his name as a candidate for Ordinary. Stephens being so young there were a number who wanted to taste the sweets of political office, and who desired to be honored among the first to be selected by the people. Three candidates announced themselves as opponents in the race. Meaning no reflection or discredit to the gentlemen who opposed Mr. Brown, it must be said with credit to him that his election was remarkable in that his vote overcame the total vote of his opponents by a majority of fifty-one. The Ordinary had quarters in the upstairs of the Brown building, which he had rented for the county offices and court room. During this time he had under consideration the project of building a court house suitable for the demands of a live, progressive new county. The court house was built in 1907, and is one of the handsomest public buildings in the State. The wise business and economic administration of Mr. Brown h as given the people of Stephens the best court house in Georgia when the price is considered. Usually when an Ordinary of a county builds a court house it means the end of his political career. Mr. Brown has broken such a precedent, however, by his re-election this year. Again he had opposition, but a very nice majority was given by the voters of the county. Mr. Brown is a big warm hearted and genial servant of the people, a man who keeps the strings to his generosity ever within ready reach of his friends, and an official who, if he makes promises before the election, keeps them afterwards.
