The Line Baptist Church has a sign as you start up the driveway. It says: LINE BAPTIST CHURCH The Line Baptist Church was constituted Sept. 13, 1802 by Rev. Moses Sanders, Thomas Maxwell and Daniel White. This church was just over the line between Georgia and Cherokee lands. Meetings couldn't be held at night, because all white people had to be off Indian lands by sundown. Thirteen churches met here and formed the Tugalo Baptist Association in 1818. This Assoc-iation met here in 1822 and 1842. The Liberty Baptist Association was formed here in 1867. This building, about 70 years old, is the second one on this site. It has stood in Franklin, Habersham, and Banks counties. The people I know that are buried there are: Jessie G. LEWALLEN, b. Dec. 30, 1847, d. Feb. 18, 1932 Jessie enlisted in Co. D, 1st GA Volunteers, CSA Elizer (MILES) LEWALLEN, b. Dec. 1, 1849, d. June 16, 1927 This is Jessie G.'s wife. There is no headstone but she is buried immediately to the right of Jessie G. Jesse S. LEWALLEN, b. Oct. 6, 1892, d. July 6, 1951 Jesse was a Pvt. In the (?) Engineers, World war I Sallie LEWALLEN, b. Dec. 15, 1846, d. Dec. 12, 1929 This is Jessie G.'s sister. LEWALLEN (double headstone) W. Claude, b. Aug. 10, 1877, d. Sep. 14, 1952 Bertie Lewallen Hawkins, b. May 10, 1898, d. May 31, 1994 - - - - - - - - Interesting side note: The formal cemetary is on top of a little hill on the west side of Old Hwy 441. The highway is at the bottom of the hill. Across the street (on the east side of Old 441) is another cemetary. Don't know if this is supposed to be part of the Line Baptist Church Cemetary or not. I tend to think not because the church cemetary is very well maintained while this little section across the highway is in serious disrepair. When I was there, someone had just recently cut down shrubs and sapplings that had ovegrown the area. Most of the graves had hand-made markers and very few were readable. However.... Here are 2 more tombstones from that lower section. J. A. LEWALLEN, b. Oct. 6, 1854, d. Apr. 16, 1916 This is Jessie G.'s brother William LEWALLEN, b. 1812, d. Aug. 11, 1900 This is the father of Jessie G., John A. and Sallie. William was also a Confederate soldier.
