June 28, 1892 Homer, Ga., June 19. -- A death from hydrophobia is reported to have occurred in this county. The victim was a young lady just reaching womanhood, the eldest daughter of Mrs. York, four miles from town. She had been sick since Sunday and a physician was called in, who examined the case and suspicioned the presence of the deadly poison in the system. At his second visit his suspicions proved correct and the patient's life was soon ended by the horrible disease. The characterisitic symptoms of rabies developed in a day or two after the attack -- dread of water, difficulty in swallowing, convulsions, etc. The sight of the water dipper would produce convulsions. The girl had played with a small dog some time previous and it is reported to have licked her hand, the poison being absorbed probably from a small sore on the finger. This is the second death from hydrophobia in this county, the first case being that of a son of Mr. J. O. Thompson, who was bitten by a small fice dog on the face and died in about a month afterwards.
