I. D. HUDGINS SUCCUMBS by Miss Corinne Tanner On Saturday, June 27 at 3 o'clock in the afternoon the death angel called at the home of Mr. I. D. Hudgins on Church Street and took the beloved companion and mother, Mrs. Hudgins. The end came quietly, gently and suddenly, Mrs. Hudgins seemingly was in good health. She had prepared the days meals and sat in the swing with her husband when at once death came. The funeral service was held from Oak Grove Baptist Church on her birthday, Monday afternoon, June 29. Rev. H. M. Humphrey and Rev. W. A. Keel officiated. Interment followed in the church cemetery. The Buice Quartet from Suwanee sang softly and sweetly Mrs. Hudgins favorite songs, T=The Golden Bells, Asleep in Jesus and Death is Only A Dream. Mrs. Hudgins, before her marriage, was Miss Mary Talula Wilson of Banks County, daughter of the late Jacob S. Wilson and wife who were well known to the older inhabitants of the city where they lived for a number of years. Mrs. Hudgins was born in Banks County near Commerce, June 29, 1875. At the age of 15 years she professed Christ and joined Nails Creek Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Robert Hawkins. It was at Gillsville in 1888 that she met Mr. Hudgins when she was a student of his in the literary school. Seven years later on October 8, 1895, she married Mr. Hudgins in South Carolina. Her marriage has been a supremely happy one blessed by 4 children, Mrs. Fred Sheffield of Akron, Ohio, Mr. Hubert of Hudgins of Atlanta, Miss Mary Hudgins of this city, who survive her. One son, Mr. Wilbur Hudgins having preceded her to the grave by 5 years. Mrs. Hudgins was a sweet and noble character, kind and home loving. To know her was to love her. She went about doing good with that sweet smile on hr bright face will dwell in the hearts of her friends and loved ones forever. In addition to her own children, she had been the mother of a great number of orphans who cherish her sweet memory. She was devoted to her husband, her children, her grandchildren, her friends, her home and her church, having about her home at every opportunity possible the pastors she had know. She was a member of the Women's Missionary Society of Central Church and in her passing they have lost one of their most beloved and faithful members, for she was always willing and waiting to do something to make others happy and those who had the pleasure of enjoying her friendship share deeply in her loss. For the past few years, Mrs. Hudgins health has not permitted her to take an active party in community affairs, but she maintained an eager interest and drew around her a large circle of warm friends who will miss her sweet and gentle presence. It can be truthfully said of Mrs. Hudgins that Gainesville and Oak Grove church have lost one of their sweetest and purest Christians. In addition to her immediate family, there are surviving her 3 brothers, Mr. William Oscar Wilson of Newberry, SC, Rev. John Wilson of Ninety Six, SC, and Mr. J. D. Wilson of Monroe; 2 sisters, Mrs. D. D. Dixon of Monroe and Miss Addie Wilson of this city; 9 grandchildren to whom Mrs. Hudgins was so affectionate and loved freely. A goodly number of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins came to pay the last tribute of love and respect to this beloved woman. The beautiful and abundant floral offering attested Mrs. Hudgins prominence and the esteem, love and respect in which she was held.
