He was born in Franklin County to Charles and Grace Miller. Grace, formerly Grace Smith, was a native of the East Wolf Creek area in Rabun County and the daughter of Serena Hunnicutt Smith. He graduated from Jonesboro High School before earning a bachelor's degree from North Georgia College & State University and later a master's degree from the University of Nebraska. He served in the U.S. Army for more than 20 years, including two tours of duty during the Vietnam War. He then spent another 20 years in civil service at Fort McPherson, where he served as deputy engineer, and at Fort Gillem in Forest Park, where he served as chief engineer. After retiring from civil service, he was called back to service to build the War Room in Kuwait during Desert Storm. His faith led him to help others search their family genealogy. He wrote two books on his family genealogy. Through his work in genealogy, he helped countless people find their heritage. He was a self-taught carpenter and a giving man who made and gave clocks and canes to those he saw in need. He was a member of Flippen Methodist Church in McDonough for more than 16 years. He gave of himself with time and gifts of carpentry within the church and toys to children. He was preceded in death by a son, Glenn Miller. Survivors include: his wife of 50 years, Mavis Miller; a daughter and son-in- law, Kay and Paul Amick of Lakemont; a daughter-in-law, Frances Miller of Ennis, Texas; and five grandchildren, Jacob, Daniel and Andrew Amick and Samantha and Michelle Miller. A memorial service was held Jan. 6 at Flippen United Methodist Church with officiating by Hershel Childs and the Rev. Colin Dacus.
