QUILLA SHEFFIELD
CARNESVILLE, Ga. - Quilla Sheffield of Atlanta, formerly of Carnesville, died 
Wednesday afternoon in an automobile accident.

She was a native of Franklin County, a daughter of the late J. A. and Alice 
Gillespie Kesler.  Survivors include her husband, Scott Sheffield, four 
sisters, Misses Gwen, Joan and Faye Kesler of Atlanta and Mrs. Ann South of 
Carnesville; and two brothers, Oliver Kesler of Toccoa and Gaylord Kesler of 
Clermont.

Services will be conducted by the Revs. Douglas Harmon and Ralph Broome at 2 
p.m. Friday at Prospect Methodist Church.  Burial will be in the church 
cemetery.   The body is at Ginn Funeral Home.

WRECKS - 5 KILLED IN CAR-TRUCK CRASH

CARNESVILLE - Five persons were killed and one was injured here Wednesday 
afternoon, when a car and tractor-trailer collided at the intersection of 
Highway 51 and 59 near the Gold Mine Community.

The five fatalities were identified as Mrs. Alice Gillespie Kesler, 74, of 
Carnesville; Ms. Doris Kesler Mepham, 54, and Ms. Quilla Sheffield, 46, both of 
Atlanta, Mark Sheffield, 15, and Rachel Jane Sheffield, 15, both of Houston, 
Tex.   All five victims were reportedly passengers in the auto, according to 
Georgia State Patrol reports.   Ms. Sheffield was driver of the car.

David Coursey, 22, of Conyers, who was the tractor-trailer driver, was listed 
in stable condition late Wednesday night at Athens General Hospital.

State patrol troopers A. J. Pavliscsak and W.M. Remsen, who investigated the 
accident, said the wreck occurred when the tractor-trailer, traveling north on 
Highway 51, disregarded the stop sign and collided with the 1970 Oldsmobile 
Cutlass, which was traveling east on Highway 59.

The five victims apparently died instantly.  The truck driver was freed from 
the wreckage and taken to Athens General.  The state patrol officers said there 
was no visible sign of skid marks, although reports indicate the vehicles were 
not speeding.
