Mrs. A. S. Whitfield, 89, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. H. Murray, 
in the Damascus community last Friday, August 6th, following an illness of 9 
months with paralysis.
Mrs. Whitfield was born in Alabama, the former Miss Alpha Silla Cash.  She was 
married to Mr. Marion Whitfield in 1868.  She was a faithful Christian being a 
member of Damascus Baptist Church.  She was well known in both Franklin and 
Banks counties, and had many friends who are grieved to learn of her passing.
Funeral services were held at Damascus Church, Sunday, August 8th with Rev. 
Joe Brown and Rev. Fletcher Durham officiating.  Pallbearers were her 
grandsons:  Clarence Kesler, Morris Caudell, Willie Purcell, Arien Murray, J. 
D. Murray, Olin Whitfield.  Flower girls were her granddaughters and great 
granddaughters, Dorothy Caudell Boyer, Marian Purcell, Helen Purcell, Betty 
Purcell, Doris Whitfield, Joel Whitfield, Jean Whitfield, & Mary Evelyn 
Murray.  A large crowd attended the funeral.
Her husband, who was a Confederate veteran, preceded her to the grave by 
several years.
She is survived by the following children:  Mrs. Phillip (Ella) Purcell, 
Ashland; Mr. J. Elbert Whitfield, Toccoa; Mr. Thomas H. Whitfield, Texas; Mrs 
Bob (Nancy) Verner, Ashland; Mrs. Joe H. (Nora) Murray, Homer; Mrs. Luther 
(Lelar) Murray, Alto; Mr. Claude Whitfield, Texas.  2 sisters: Mrs. Amy 
Jackson, Baldwin; Mrs. Mary Kesler, Ashland.  3 brothers:  Mr. W. Marion Cash, 
Carnesville; Mr. John Albert Cash, Ashland and Mr. Elijah V. Cash, Ashland.
44 living grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and 
nephews also survive.

Additional Comments:
Alpha Whitfield was daughter of Hiram Russell Cash and Sarah Ann Roe.
She was preceded in death by the following children: Jincy Purcell, Maude 
Purcell, Ethel Caudell, Sara Ann Kesler, and Ora Miller.
