H. DOGGETT, 99, PASSES AT HOME OF GRANDDAUGHTER Henry H. Doggett, 99, died at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. H. C. Johnson near Statham on July 20 at 7 a.m. following an illness of several months. He had lived in the community his entire life time. He was a veteran of the War Between the States and the last surviving member of his father's immediate family. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Shady Doggett. Funeral rites which were largely attended were held from the Hebron Church in Oconee County on July 22 at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Otis McNeal as the officiating minister. Brief graveside rites were conducted by the American Legion. Two children survive, Mrs. J. A. Puckett, Athens, Georgia and Mrs. F. A. Doggett, Oxford, Georgia. Fourteen grandchildren, 23 great grand children, and one great-great grandson also survive. The Williams and Kelley Funeral Home conducted arrangements. Additional Comments: He lived in the northwest corner of Oconee County known as Dark Corner, and some records indicate he died July 19 rather than 20. His father, Shady Doggett (b. 1908 d. after 1880) was listed in one census as Shade, but his real name was Shadrack (or Shadrach). Henry's mother, Shadrack's first wife, was Jane Vickers (b. around 1812). His child listed here as Mrs. F. A. Doggett was actually his son, Freddy Augustus Doggett (1881-1975). Henry was the last Confederate veteran living in Oconee County, and he left a will. He is buried with his wife Mary Alma Bell Ward-Doggett (1861-1937) in the Hopkins-Delay Cemetery on Hebron Church Rd.
