McClatchey:, and Sally Bruce McClatchey, with permission. Contributed by Linda Atkins Oliver Davis Anderson, called O.D., was bom in Maryville, TN, the third child of Isaac IV and Julianna Foute. The family moved from Tennessee to Cass Co., GA in 1834. This was still Indian country and the Indians had never seen such a blond child. They carried him around on their shoulders frightening his mother. After his marriage to Amelia Gaines of Cassville, O.D. and Amelia settled in Adairsville. They kept a hotel while the children were small. Later O.D., as he was always called, was a merchant there. The children were Laura, James, Anna, Ella, Julia, Francis and Robert (born at the close of the War). O.D. was turned down by the CSA because of a defective eye, and became depot agent and post master of the W & A Railroad, an important artery in supplies. But as the Yankees crept closer, most people chose to refugee. During the Battle of Resaca, the family prepared to leave. 0. D. secured a box car for them that was to be their home the next two months. After trying living in S.C a short time, they returned to Monroe, GA, rented a house and the children made friends and went to school. O.D. spent most of his time in South Georgia moving cars and various properties along the state road as the Southerners tried to keep the rolling stock out of the hands of the Yankees. After the War, O.D. took his family back to Adairsville. Life was hard as he tried farming and when that did not work out, he turned back to the mercantile business. He had joined his wife's church, Oothcalooga Baptist, in the 50's. Though raised a Presbyterian, 0. D. was a devout member of Oothcalooga, serving as clerk many years. By 1881 when his wife died, his children had married and left home. O.D. and Amelia spent their last four years together in Cartersville to be near their children. He was 56 when Amelia died. Lonesome after her death, 0. D. married his wife's sister, Susan Gaines. They bought an orange grove in Apopka, FL. He worked hard and the grove flourished and his children and grandchildren enjoyed visits with Aunt Sue and Grandfather. Then came the freeze of 1892. They were wiped out and returned to Cartersville. Sue died in 1902 and is buried in Oothcalooga Cemetery, Adairsville, GA.. O.D. lived with his children, honored and held in affection by his grandchildren, until his death in 1909, resulting from a fall (probably due to a stroke) from the porch of J. M. Neel. Both 0. D. and Amelia are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Cartersville. ======================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be freely used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
