G 18th GA Infantry. He enlisted on June 17, 1861 and was discharged in November 1861. He then reenlisted to Co. D 56th GA Infantry. He was a POW and paroled from Vicksburg, MS July 8th, 1863. He also appeared on a list of effective men present and furloughed at Enterprise, MS on July 23, 1863. His last entry in his compiled records is in 1864. He appeared on a register of the effects of deceased soldiers, turned over to Quartermasters, CSA According to the pension records filed by his widow in 1891, “It was reported to her that he was sick in Dalton, GA and was removed to Jonesborough and died there.” Testifying on her behalf were the following men: L.F. Manley stated “He (Silas Cantrell) was sick in December 1863 and was carried to the hospital in January following at Dalton GA. L.F. Manley put him in the ambulance when carried off from camp to the hospital, and that he was helpless - very near dead, and that he (L.F. Manley) pulled off his own shirt and put in on him (Silas Cantrell) and it was reported afterward that he died. We have not seen or heard from him since that time.” “R.P. Owen testifies to his enlistment as stated above and that he (Owens) messed with Silas Cantrell up to the Bakers Creek Fight when he (Owen) was captured and he has not seen him since. It was reported that he (Silas Cantrell) died.” The widow of Silas Cantrell was Cynthia/Cintha Cantrell. She applied for a widow’s pension in the years 1891, 1894 thru 1904. We are hoping to find the final resting place for Silas Cantrell. He was my GG grandfather and I would love to know more about the soldiers and hospital in Jonesboro.
