Harmon John S. Harmon died Aug. 13, 2005, at his residence in Junction City. Harmon was born Aug. 22, 1922, in Bartow, Ga., the son of John S. Harmon II and Julia A. (Smith) Harmon. He was the Harmon's 13th child. Harmon joined the Army on Dec. 3, 1942, in Media, Pa., and served his country through WW II, Korea, and Vietnam. He was recognized for his service with numerous awards including the Bronze Star and the Army Commendation with Oak Leaf Clusters. Harmon retired from the military on April 1, 1971, and began a civil service career. He worked at Fort Riley from October 1971 through October 1983. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church from 1966 through October 1981, and later was active at the Fort Riley chapels. He also was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, Pearl Harbor No. 16 chapter of Junction City. Harmon married Yoshino Herbison in Geary County on July 24, 1959. Harmon was preceded in death by his father and mother, his wife, and several sisters and brothers. He is survived by one sister, Jessie Harris of Blackshear, Ga., two step children, C.C. Herbism of Lawrence, and Tonya Farmer of Kansas City, Mo. He is also survived by four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Cremation is planned with inurnment at the Columbarium, Arlington National Cemetery. Penwell Gabel Johnson Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. There will be no local services.
