It appears that Mrs. Middleton, wife of Mr. John Middleton, crossed over the mill pond on a small ferry boat on Monday afternoon to visit a neighbor, as she had been in the habit of doing since her residence in the neighborhood, and that her husband went over later in the evening to escort her home. They got to the ferry boat about 8 o'clock to start home, the husband pulling the boat over by a rope that was stretched across the pond. When they had gone about half way, the rope unfortunately struck Mrs. Middleton, throwing her into the water. She immediately sunk and before rising to the surface, her husband jumped in to rescue her, but instead of saving his wife, he was carried to the bottom and both were drowned. We have never been called upon to pen a sadder occurrence than this, for these two happy people were married only four months ago, and had just fairly launched out upon the sea of life. Their bodies were recovered soon after the drowning and when found, the husband's arms were clasped lovingly around the form of his young wife.
