Ga. R. R. drawn by H. C. Clement engine, Will Chester, engineer, was slowly backing down to the depot at Marietta, Jesse Quarles, a brother of Dock Quarles who lived at this place a short while ago, was run over and instantly killed, and his body fearfully mangled. He was walking on the W. A. side track and a heavy W. & A. freight was passing him on the main track when he stepped over on the M. & N. Ga. track, not more than 6 feet from the approaching train. Before he could be made to hear or pushed off the track the rear coach passed over him. He was 50 years old and partially deaf, and evidently did not hear or notice the approaching train, although it is claimed by some that he stepped on the track with suicidal intent. At the coroner's inquest the M. & N. Ga. railroad was entirely exonerated from any blame. The remains of Quarles were carried to Adairsville for interment Wednesday. He leaves a wife, no children. He had two or three fingers mashed off coupling cars on the M. & N. Ga. R. R. last year. Since then he has been night watchman at their railroad shops until about two months ago when he quit working for the company.
