Rhodes ABBEVILLE - Vera T. Rhodes, 98, of Abbeville, GA, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at the home of her daughter in Birmingham, AL. Funeral services will be 11A.M. Thursday at the Paulk Funeral-Home in Fitzgerald, GA, with Rev. James Faircloth officiating. Family eulogies will be given by Wayne Dowdy, Sherri Taylor and Michelle Gerber. Interment will follow in Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery in Wilcox County, GA. Officiating will be Johnny Dowdy with benediction given by Vera Margaret Smith. Visitation will be 10:00 until 11:00A.M. Thursday morning. Mrs. Rhodes was born in Wilcox County, GA April 7,1904, to the late J.W. Tomberlin and Alice Miller Tomberlin. She is the widow of the late John A. Rhodes. Mrs. Rhodes was a life long resident of Wilcox County. She was a homemaker, but also was the owner and operator of the popular fishing ground, Rhodes Lake, in Wilcox County for 39 years. Mrs. Rhodes was an avid genealogist. She was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Wilcox County. She was a former member and Junior High Sunday School teacher at Lebanon Baptist Church in Wilcox County, GA. Mrs. Rhodes is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Sammie and Joicelyn Rhodes of Collins, GA; daughter, Mrs. Charlie (Alice) Dowdy of Gulfport, Mississippi, daughter and son-in-law, Johnnie and Ben Knight, Sr. of Birmingham, Alabama; sister, Verlin Willcox, Abbeville, GA; 7 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 20 great, great grandchildren. Paulk Funeral Home, Fitzgerald, GA, is in charge of arrangements.
