Altamaha died at 9:25 p. m. Thursday (Jan. 9, 1969) at the Colony Home. Funeral services were conducted from Arbor Baptist Church at 2:30 p. m. Sunday with Rev. I. R. Hobby and Rev. David Fisher officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were W. B. Wilson, J. E. Crowley, Julius Rodgers, Virgil Young, Clay Sidwell and Owen Segraves. Mr. Hughes was a retired merchant, member of Arbor Baptist Church, a [n]ative of Jefferson and had lived in the community for 40 years. He was married to the late Mrs. Ina Howel Hughes; Survivors include: Three daughters, Mrs. Eugene Boyette and Mrs. R. E. Lee Sr. of Fitzgerald and Mrs. W. R. Watkins Jr., Montgomery, Ala. A brother, Roy L. Hughes, MIami, Fla. A sister, Mrs. Susan Harris, MIami, Fla. Three grandchildren also survive. Paulk Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Additional Comments: After his first wife, Ina, passed, Fred married Mrs. Maude Stanley Gibbs (widow of Henry Ezekiel Gibbs) on 10 June 1951 in Fitzgerald, Ben Hill Co., GA.
