Strickland, Sr. The funeral service for Rev.John R. Stiickland, Sr. of Irwinville, who died Wednesday,February 12, 1997 at Life Care Center in Fitzgerald, was held Friday, February 14, 1997. He was 83. Elder Rabon Lord and the Rev.David Wiggins officiated at the 11:00 a.m. service with interment in the Evergreen Cemetery in Fitzgerald. Special music was provided by organist Marty Smith, and soloist Christie Heard. Pallbearers were Chris Tucker, Jerry Shaw, Larry Haire, Howard L. Haire, Nathan Haire and Wayne Haire. The deceased was born March 5,1913 in Cedartown, GA to Lee and Minnie Sargent Strickland and had lived in the community since 1992.A retired Church of God minister, he pastored churches in Alabama,Tennessee and Georgia including Swilley Hill Church of God in Valdosta, Kimbrell's Chapel in Miller county, Ashburn Church of God, Ashburn and Pitts Church of God in Pins. He was also a former employee of Fitzgerald Mills and Tennessee Valley Authority. Survivors include two daughters,Pat Hancock and Betty Haire, both of Irwinville; one son, John R. Strickland, Jr., of Lakeland; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Tommie Lou McCrary Strickland.
