The Fitzgerald Herald Fitzgerald, Ben Bill County, Georgia Thursday, June 27, 1940 Front Page MRS S. G. PRYOR PASSES ON. One of the best loved women in this community and influential, too, in all the higher things in life, has gone from our midst and she will be sorely missed from all the accustomed places of her wide and effective activities. Born as Anna Wilson, second daughter of her parents, Hon. And Mrs. W. A. Wilson, on January 8, 1864, in Americus, Ga., her happy girlhood was a blessing to them and the sister and the brothers with whom she outlived. They were Mrs. Mary Batts and Messrs, Ross Wilson, Mack Wilson, Jarratt Wilson and Frank Wilson, all outstanding citizens of Sumter county and other sections of later residence. On December 24, 1883, the deceased married Mr. Shepherd Green Pryor, and in Georgia and in far off Texas and back again they made a happy home for themselves and the fortunate children who came into their keeping. Eleven in all, seven have lived to be a comfort and blessing to their parents’ declining years, serving in upright and helpful lives in their communities, and with one exception at close hand to brighten and cheer the eventide of life. Their grandchildren growing up around them in happy association. The family includes the bereft husband the six sons, Wilson of Douglas, S. G. and Jarratt, of Fitzgerald; R. M. of Moultrie; Frank, of Texas, , and Will Pryor, of Cordele, and their one daughter, Mrs. C. C. Persons, of Fitzgerald. Two well loved nieces of intimate association have been Mrs. Jessee Powekk and Mrs. Roy Adams. Mr. and Mrs. Pryor brought their family to Fitzgerald in January 1901, and have continuously occupied their home on Merrimac drive for nearly 40 years. They have been identified with all the civic, social and religious interests of this city all this time and especially has Mrs Pryor had a leading part in all organizations of a progessive type. She at one time or another been president of the U. D. C. chapter, of the Woman’s Club, the Garden Club, the Wesley Emory Bible Class, regent of the D. A. R. and was always one of the most ardent and successful flower growers and garden and city park boosters in the city. No one who has present will be likely to forget the beautiful memorial service she planned and executed at the last Garden Club birthday in March, with a tribute to every past president, the present president, who was ill, and deceased members. Mrs. Pryor was an exemplary Christian and had a tender heart, a gracious manner and was a friend to everyone she knew and by these she will be missed and held long in living memory. Long to be remembered, too, was that happy occasion of community-wide celebration, The Golden Wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Pryor, on December 24, 1933. The funeral services were conducted at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the First Methodist church with the ministers, Rev. J. H. Wilson of Tifton, a relative, Rev. B. L. Pafford of Montezuma, a former pastor, Rev. C. A. Ginn, long-time neighbor and friend; and Rev. Leland Moore, pastor of the deceased, officiating. A brief tribute was given by Rev. Wilson and the other ministers gave scripture readings or prayers. A beautiful duet was sung by Mrs Elmer Waits and Mrs. Burr Stokoe, and the full choir gave two numbers, Mrs. Cecil Cannon at the organ. The church was filled to capacity and the wealth of beautiful floral offerings was another testimony of love and sympathy. The large family connection and friends from Sumter county and Coffee county and other friends formed a large cortege. There was the honorary escort of the church stewards, city officials and friends, and the pallbearers were A. H. Denmark, James L. McCarty, H. A. Powell, Allan C. Garden, David L. Paulk, Mark E. Mathis, John B. Russell and J. C. McDonald. Interment was in Evergreen cemetery. The immediate family who came from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Pryor and daughter, Miss Emily, of Douglas and son, Mr. Sanford Pryor, of Montezuma; Mr. and Mrs. Mack Pryor and son from Moultrie; Mr. Frank Pryor of Texas; Mr. Will Pryor of Cordele; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Mmathis of Columbus, Ga. Joining their parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. G. Pryor, Jr. Additional Comments: Compiler Notes: I was unable to locate the grave of Sarah Carleton Jarratt Wilson wife of William Adams Wilson.
