Charlie E. Simpson, 90, of Fitzgerald died August 12, 2009, at Tift Re Regional Medical Center in Tifton. Born January 8, 1919, in Mitchell County to the later Elias and Fannie S Stanford Simpson, he served in the US Army during WWII and awarded the Purple H Heart for injuries at Leyte Island in the Pacific Theatre. He was a former r resident of Berrien County before moving to Fitzgerald in 1964, where he was a associated with Electric Motor Works for many years. He and his wife became involved in full-time ministry in 1957. He served as b both pastor and evangelist and retired from pastoral work in the early 1970's. H He pastored five churches, Millen Church of God, Ashburn Church of God, Ocilla C Church of God, Douglas Chapel Church of God in Douglas County and Eastman C Church of God. He served as interim pastor at Fitzgerald Church of God in the e early 1990's. He and his wife were active members of Fitzgerald Church of God, w where he continued to preach and lead the Pastor's Prayer Partners. He had also s served as a member of the church council and taught Sunday School. He and his w wife were recently honored at the South Georgia Church of God Camp Meeting as t the Senior Adult Ministerial Couple of the Year. He gave the invocation at G Governor Sonny Perdue's inauguration and enjoyed spending time with his family a and friends and fishing when he had the opportunity. Survivors include his wife, Marie Luke Simpson of Fitzgerald, children and their spouses, Janet and Larry Young, Patsy and George Ray and Mike and Lynn B. Simpson all of Fitzgerald; grandchildren, Chris Young, Amanda (Bill) Barrs, Michelle (Brent) Griffin, Christy Ray, Adam Wadsworth, George Ray and Tyler Wadsworth; great-grandchildren, Abby Barrs, Shelby Griffin, Raegan Griffin and Brent Brentley Griffin; sisters, Irene Selph and Melba Harnage both of Nashville; broth brothers, Cecil Griner of Nashville and Harold Griner of Tifton; several nieces and n and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three broth brothers and one sister. Funeral services were held August 15 at 11 a.m. at Fitzgerald Church of God with with the Revs. Leroy Spivey and Dewain Joiner officiating. Chris Young and Geor George Ray gave eulogies. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery. Paulk Funeral Home of Fitzgerald was in charge of arrangements.
