M. M. Stephens Dies Suddenly. Although in Impaired health which has recently caused the retirement of M. M. Stephens from active bank business which he has followed all of his adult life, the sudden passing he had on Friday at the age of 68 was a great shock to this community. He has lived her since 1904. Joking while he was busy with his lawn until dark Thursday evening, he was awakened to terrible pain in the morning, pronounced as cerebral hemorrhage, with neither relief nor recovery possible though every possible effort was made to the end. Mr. Stephens was a able man, conscientious and energetic at all his activities, in church or in sport. He was devoted to his family and home. He leaves his wife, Leila Pace Stephens whom he married in 1906, and their three children, Gladys Stephens Jones of Savannah, and Anne Stephens Jenks, of Hopewell, Va., and Eugene Stephens of Rochelle and Jacksonville Beach. There are nine grandchildren. He is survived by three brothers and three sisters. Funeral services were conducted by Dr. Carey Vinzant, pastor at the First Baptist Church, with Rev. C. A. Jackson, Jr., of the Methodist Church assisting. Organ music was rendered by Mrs. Carey Vinzant. Floral offerings were lavish in numbers and beauty, and because of a heavy rainstorm these were kept at the funeral home until Monday for placing on the grave. Pallbearers were M. W. Estes, M. L. Doster, J. M. Noble, and W. K. Holt, Jr. of Rochelle, J. C. McDonald and Neil Peavy of Fitzgerald. There was a group of 16 friends who were an honorary escort. The relatives from out of town included Rev. and Mrs. Jeffry Jones of Savannah, with Jeffry, Jr., Marlin, Roger, and Jeanette, Mrs. Ted Jenks of Hopewell, Va., Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Stephens from Rochelle with Bill and Carolyn and their married daughter, Mrs. W. E. Coffman and Mr. Coffman from Atlantic Beach, Miss Rita Stephens, and Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Mosely, a sister of Mr. Stephens, of Jennings, Fla., Mrs. Joseph Zant, of Achuala, Fla., sister of Mr. Stephens with her son, Steve Zant, and grandson, Joe Zant, Mrs. Lillian Priester of Macon, niece and grand niece of Mrs. Stephens.
