Next Column: Francis Watson Soon Departs For Training Leaves Tuesday To Serve Enlistment Period of Four Years ------------ Interest over the city centers next week in the departure of Francis Watson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Humbert Watson, who will leave Tuesday, September 16 for New York to begin a four months period of training in order to become a naval officer. His training period begins by spending one month aboard the ship 'Prairie State' which is immediately followed by a three months training period at North-western University in Chicago, Ill. His enlistment cove4rs a period of four years. Graduation with an AB or a BS degree from a four year college is the major requirement for the naval officers training course. Special courses in mathematics are also listed among the requirements, Mr. Watson received a position last year as teacher and head coach in the Sandersville High school. Next column: He was re-elected for the same position with the school for next year but because of the naval training course, he was compelled to hand in his resignation early this summer. Mr. Watson graduated from the Fitzgerald High School, being among the honor graduates. Not only did he excel in his scholastic ability, but he was among the best football players that Fitzgerald has ever produced. His athletic ability was also reflected when he represented the Fitzgerald High school in track at the state meet. From the Fitzgerald High school, he attended Middle Georgia College at Cochran, Ga. He led his entire class at graduation as the first honor graduate. He also took part in many campus activities, including editor of the school paper. His great success at M. C. C. awarded him with a scholarship to Wofford College at Spartanburg, S. C. He reached even greater success here where after two years he graduated with high distinction.
