Sutton of Berrien county. The deed was committed after the services had closed for the day and most of the congregation had gone home. It appears that the participants had left the church with the congregation but returned in company with some others to search for a jug that had been hid out. The party was well charged with red-liquor, a quarrel ensued and Anderson received a mortal wound from a pistol in the hands of Sutton. He died shortly afterwards. The coroner’s jury returned a verdict of murder in self-defense. Thus intoxicating drink has hurried another human being into eternity and made others amenable to the courts for flagrant crimes committed in utter disregard of the law. It is said that no less than twenty pistol shots were fired on or near the church grounds before the murder was committed. Every law-abiding citizen of Berrien county should feel it a bound on duty to thoroughly investigate this outrageous proceeding, apprehend the offenders and use every means in their power to have the severest penalties of the law inflicted upon the violators. When men endowed with reason and the privileges of citizenship lose all respect for themselves, society and their maker they should be made to suffer for it.
