Mr. Coarsey and his brother-in-law, a youth named Ivy Rhoden, were on their way to Brookfield, when they met Johnson in the road. The negro owed young Rhoden sixty cents, and Rhoden asked him for it, when Johnson began cursing and threatening him. Coarsey interfered, and the negro turned upon him, advancing with a knife. Coarsey drew his pistol and began to walk backwards, warning the negro not to come further, or he would be shot. Johnson slapped himself on the breast, and said he had a box of thirty-eights already in there. To stop him, Coarsey fired one shot, which took affect in the negro’s right breast. He continued to advance, Coarsey backing, until he could retreat no further, when he fired again, the ball entering Johnson’s breast near the heart, killing him almost instantly. The coroner’s jury returned a verdict of justifiable homicide.
