Both negroes. The negroes in Lewis & Wells’ turpentine quarter had been in a general row, and the disturbance grew so violent that Mr. W. Wells, a member of the firm, accompanied by Mr. J.W. Morgan went to quiet them down. As they came up, Chandler said to them, “It is none of your business, and I am not scared,” and Carr asked Chandler, “What is the matter with you?” The words were scarcely out of Carr’s mouth when Chandler fired at him. Carr returned the fire, killing Chandler instantly. Chandler died with his pistol in his hand, and his finger on the trigger. The shouting occurred about dark. A coroner’s jury was empaneled by Justice H.L. Lovitt, consisting of W.C. Walker, foreman; J.J. Griffin, B.W. Lovett, G.W. Moore and A.D. Mathis, who after a thorough investigation, returned a verdict of justifiable homicide. Chandler said, about two minutes before he was shot, that he was not afraid of Jesus Christ or any many, and that he felt like sending everybody in LaConte to hell. Perhaps he is afraid of the devil now if he knows anything.
