Ellarbee, a well known negro farmer was killed at Enigma yesterday by Mr. Sam J. Shippy, his landlord. Bad feeling had arisen between Mr. Shippy and Ellarbee, and the latter started down to Shippy’s house with a double-barreled shotgun, and on his way down made threats about him or Shippy one not living until night. Mr. Shippy was warned of the threats and met Ellarbee in front of his house and told him to go home and put up his gun and go to work. Ellarbee made some impudent remark and several words were exchanged, when Ellarbee took his gun from his shoulder, cocking the right-hand barrel as he did so. Mr. Shippy seized the gun, and being a stouter man than Ellarbee, wrenched it away from and struck him a violent blow over the head with it fracturing the lock and breaking the gun at the breach. Ellarbee fell unconscious from the blow and died the following night. A coroner’s inquest was held and a verdict of justifiable homicide rendered. Both barrels of the gun were found to be loaded with buckshot.
