 Former German Prisoner of War, Julian Brown Abel of Enigma, died August 17, 
2008 at Tift Regional Medical Center.
 Born April 23, 1921 in Berrien County, he was the eldest son of Lowell Dawson 
and Nelsie Charlotte Pickard Abel. A life-long resident of Enigma, except for 
his World War II service, he was retired from the U.S. Postal Service.
 A volunteer for the U.S. Army, he was assigned to the Army Air Corps, and 
after a brief period of training, became a tailgunner on a B-17 Bomber. During 
his first mission over Nazi-occupied France, his plane was shot down by enemy 
fire. He parachuted out and reached the ground safely. He was captured by the 
Germans and sent to the infamous Stalag 17, where he spent 17 months as a 
prisoner. After his liberation and the end of the war, he returned to Enigma, 
where he spent the rest of his life. His wartime service was honored last year 
by the State of Georgia and a bridge just west of Enigma was named in his 
honor. City officials in Enigma also recognized him with a sign honoring him as 
a resident of Enigma.
 A member of the Congregation Christian Church, he was preceded in death by a 
daughter, Billy Karen, two brothers, Herbert "Lonnie" Abel and James "Bill" 
Abell, and sister, Nell Dawson Abell Mathis.
 He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Edna Whitfield Abel of Enigma; 
brother, Paul Abell of Nokomis, FL; three sisters, Mattie Abell Robinson of 
Adel, Ruth Abell Phagan of Van Buren, AR and Ann Abell Mayfield of Keystone 
Heights, FL; numerous nieces and nephews who were loved as children and 
grandchildren; also, a special sister-in-law, Cricket Land of Tifton.
 Funeral services were held August 19 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Bowen-
Donaldson Home for Funerals with the Revs. Pete Jones and Marv Williams 
officiating.
 Active pallbearers were Jeff Abell, John Abell, Brian Abell, Lowell Abel, 
Scott Robinson and Ron Mathis.
 Nashville VFW Post 5978 provided the Honor Guard, composed of Commander 
Raymond Shaw, and veterans Ed Gerisch, Johnny Bonds, Johnny Jones, Raymond Raft.
 He was interred at Enigma City Cemetery with full military honors provided by 
a Color Guard from Moody AFB.
 Bowen Donaldson Home for Funerals was in charge of arrangements.
