Born May 23, 1933 to the late Foster and Ida Lee Barnard Akridge, he left Nashville at an early age, entering the United States Army where he retired as 1st Sgt. after 20 years of service. After retirement he started his second career with Dodge Cooper Refinery where he retired after 20 years as department head, and became a consultant for the copper industry for several more years. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Suzanne Akridge of El Paso; two sons and daughters in law, John and Yumiko, Phillip and Nona; granddaughter, Stephanie, and great granddaughter, Angelique; two sisters and one brother in law, Jimmie Lea Rowan of Nashville and Rebecca and Jim Dowdy of Ray City; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a grandson, John Jr., a victim of the war in Iraq. Memorial services were held June 9 from 5-9 p.m. in the Chapel of Martin Funeral Home East with recitation of the Rosary beginning at 7 p.m. Funeral mass was celebrated on June 10 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Stephen Catholic Church, El Paso. Interment with full military honors was held at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery, El Paso, El Paso Co., TX. Martin Funeral Home of El Paso was in charge of arrangements.
