DR. ASKEW, SR. DIED SUNDAY
Funeral Services Held Monday Afternoon at Methodist Church – 68 Years Old
	Dr. P.H. Askew, Sr., retired Nashville physician, landowner, business 
man and outstanding figure in Nashville’s growth and progress, died in a 
Thomasville hospital Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock after an extended 
illness.
	Practicing medicine here since receiving his doctor’s degree in 1897 
until his retirement two years ago, Dr. Askew had countless hundreds of 
friends who mourn his passing.  He had served practically all the families of 
this section for a period of 41 years and had been instrumental in the 
development of Nashville and vicinity.
	Dr. Askew was born in Webster county, August 24, 1872, the youngest 
and sole survivor of the twelve children of Henry J. and Mary E. Dykes Askew, 
prominent farmers in Webster county near Richland and Preston.  He received 
his education in the schools of Weston and Parrot and for three years taught 
school in Ty Ty and then decided to enter the medical profession.  After 
attending the University of Georgia Medical College at Augusta, he served his 
internship and did post graduate work in New Orleans, Atlanta, Augusta and New 
York City.
	He received his Doctor’s Degree on April 11, 1897 and came directly to 
Nashville to practice.  He once said, “at that time there wasn’t a single 
brick building in Nashville and only 200 people.  I started my practice with 
fourteen dollars cash and my medicine grip.”
	In October 1897, soon after his arrival in Nashville, he married Miss 
Flora A. Williams, daughter of W.W. and Elizabeth Knight Williams of Ty Ty.  
She died on August 27, 1935, after nearly forty years of helpfulness and 
devotion to Dr. Askew in his effort to succeed in his profession, and her 
passing is still regretted by all who knew her.
	Dr. Askew married Mrs. Bertha Malone, the former Miss Bertha Register, 
in February 1937.  She survives him.
	Dr. Askew served on the city council, the school board, and as mayor 
pro-tem.  He was a Mason, and held the belief of the Primitive Baptist church.
	He was president of the United Banking Company and held a controlling 
interest in that institution.  He was sole owner of the Hotel Nashville, the 
Liberty and Union Tobacco Warehouses, and owned over 1200 acres of land.  He 
was one of Nashville’s and Berrien county’s most prosperous and reliable 
citizens.
	Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at the Methodist 
church in Nashville with the Reverend J.O. Stanaland, pastor of the Methodist 
church, and Elder F.W. Hartley of Miami, Fla., Primitive Baptist minister, 
conducting the services.  Interment was in the city cemetery.
	Both ministers paid lasting and touching tributes to the life and 
service of Dr. Askew, pointing out that his influence and public service will 
long be remembered by all with whom he came in contact.
	Floral offerings were beautiful and profuse and the church and 
graveside were covered.
	Nashville stores closed during the funeral in respect for this 
esteemed citizen.  The United Bank was closed for the entire day.
	A choir composed of N.H. Harper, E.E. Dorsey, Edgar Griffin, Mrs. M.E. 
Perry, Mrs. E.H. Brown, and Mrs. W.M. Story, with Carolyn Bullard accompanying 
at the organ, sang “Jesus, Lover of My Soul,” “Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me,” 
and “I Can Hear My Savior Calling.”
	Pall bearers were:  P.L. Howard, Roy Talley, L.B. Moore, R.D. Rouse, 
J.L. Brogdon, A. Levin, N.T. Peeples, and P.J. Castleberry.  Dr. Askew’s 
professional friends were honorary pall-bearers including:  Dr. William Waugh, 
Dr. P.A. Shuman, Dr. W.W. Turner, Dr. H.W. Clements, Dr. Frank Byrd, Dr. W.A. 
Moore, Dr. A.G. Little, Dr. T.M. Smith, Dr. Dry Hutchinson and Dr. Guy Parrish.
	Surviving are his wife, a son, Dr. P.H. Askew, Jr.; two daughters, 
Mrs. Ina Hancock of Athens, and Mrs. Clarice Hendricks of Nashville; and three 
grandchildren, Jerry and Elizabeth Hancock of Athens, and Mrs. R.L. Dale of 
Nashville.
	The Giddens Funeral Home of Nashville was in charge of the 
arrangements.
