Born December 30, 1944, in Lowndes County to the late Archie and Virginia Harnage Atkins, he was employed with Harvey’s as warehouse manager for over 20 years. He was also employed with the Berrien County Board of Education maintenance department and was a member of Nashville First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a brother, his mother-in-law and twin grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Marie Guthrie Atkins of Nashville, four daughters, Jerelda (John) Sutton, Kimberly Chauncey and fiancé, Shane Kirk, Gina Chauncey and Sabrina (William) Kelly, all of Nashville; sons, Robert (Renee) Rowell of Abbeville and Donnell (Sabrina) Atkins of Nashville; sister, Betty (Billy) McCowan of Valdosta; three brothers, James (Sylvia) Atkins of Lake Park, Gene (Hazel) Atkins of Statenville and Billy (Teresa) Atkins of Jacksonville, FL; seven grandchildren, great-granddaughter and a great-grandson expected in December; father-in-law, Rev. Warner (Doris) Guthrie of Nashville. He is also survived by seven foreign exchange students whom he very much co considered part of his family, Eloy Aragones and Arancha Aragones both of Sp Spain, Rod Miranda of Brazil, Mitsugo Okada of Japan, Bridgette Jenson and Tr Trine Wissman both of Denmark and Mari Walta of Finland. Funeral services were held December 4 at 3 p.m. in the Chapel of Lovein F Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Shumate officiating. Deborah Boyd sang “How Great Thou Art” and “In the Garden.” “On the Wings of a Dove” was played. Interment followed in Nashville Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were David Atkins, Donnie Atkins, J.W. Warren, Chris Luke, Arthur Bow Bowles, Wayne May. Honorary pallbearers were Donnie Connell, James Rutherford, Terry Norburg, Sam Co Coulson, Don Williams, Jo Royals, Shelly Chauncey.
