Born December 18, 1922 in Berrien County to the late Billy and Flossie Willis Barber, he owned and operated for many years the Virgil Barber Construction Company, a land development and road construction/paving company. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart with Two citations, the Silver Star with two citations, the Bronze Star with two citations, French Croix de Guerre and the European/African/Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. He was a member of Vickers Church. Survivors include his wife, Gertie Mae Taylor Barber of Nashville; two daughters, Elaine Moore Pugh of Cordele and Faith Noles of Nashville; five sons, Tommy Barber, Mike Barber, Billy Barber and Roger Barber of Nashville, Wayne Barber of Adel; one sister, Merle Bartel of Seattle, Washington; 22 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, on great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, David LaDon Barber. Funeral services were held Oct 19 at 4 p.m. at Vickers Church with the Revs. Betty Barber and Ronnie Lawson officiating. The Pafford Family sand, “He’ll Hold to My Hand”, “When We All Get to Heaven”, “Peace in the Valley”, “I’ll Meet You in the Morning”. Interment was in Vickers Cemetery. Grandsons served as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were his caregivers, Teresa Boyd and Betty Pittman, all members of Vickers Church, and all his friends.
