Born July 12, 1933, to the late Lila M. Riggins and George R. Mathis, Sr., she was a resident of Abbeville, LA for many years where she served her community through her church, her daughters’ schools, and assisting voters at the polls in her district for many years. She served as Abbeville High School Bank Parent President for two different terns for a total of seven years. Helping them achieve the highest fundraiser in 1979 to attend an International Music Festival in Mexico City, Mexico., She was a life-time member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 29. She was elected 3rd District President and served as State President in 1986-1987. She served as a Louisiana Girls State Board Member for 24 years. She was active in the Vermillion Parish Government Day Program for many years. She also loved being involved with Special Olympics, helping children and veteran programs. She had a giving and loving spirit that the community and her family will miss greatly. She is survived by three daughters, Dawn and her husband, Judge Marc T. Amy of Abbe, Abra and her husband, Owen N. Lachaussee of Lafayette, and Tara and her husband, Salah W. Baker of Lafayette; six grandchildren, Megan L. Miller and her husband, Daniel of Broussard, Eric N. Lachaussee and his wife, Meghan of Broussard, Claire A. Shultz and her husband, Peter of Dublin, Jeanne L. Amy of Washington, D.C., Michael T. Amy of New Orleans, LA, and Hendrix A. Baker of Lafayette; two great-grandchildren, Amalie C. Lachaussee of Broussard and Preston M. Shultz of Dublin; sister, Norma A. Harris of Nashville. In Addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Carol W. Mathis of Ocala, FL and George R. Mathis, II, of Nashville. Funeral services were held April 20 in the Chapel of Lovein Funeral Home. Interment was in Westview Cemetery in Nashville, the place of birth, in her family’s burial plot. Pallbearers were Michael T. Amy, Daniel Miller, Peter Schultz, Hendrix Baker, Marc “Buck” Jewel, George R. Mathis. Honorary pallbearers were James “Jimmy” Landry, Anthony Fontana, Jr., Michael Prejean, Patrick Prejean, Dr. Stephen Simpson, Dawson Mathis, Dennis Wayne Mathis.
