Carlton Dies; Rites Monday Dr. Henry L. Carlton, one of Nashville’s better known and most beloved citizens and former merchants, passed away suddenly of a heart attack at the Askew Memorial Hospital here Sunday morning at 5:50 o’clock. He was 75 years of age. Although in apparently fair health for a man of his age, Dr. Carlton had suffered for years from asthma. He had been active and his death came as a shock to friends and relatives. As a young man Dr. Carlton moved to Nashville in 1918, and up until February, 1958, had operated the Berrien Drug Store. He sold his interests and retired. After graduating from the Atlanta School of Pharmacy, he came to Nashville, and he and Miss Ruby Connell were married Dec. 28, 1908. He was a member of the Nashville Baptist Church. Born and reared at Rockmart, Ga., he was a son of the late W.M. and Lydia Lee Carlton. He obtained his high school education in Rockmart prior to entering the pharmacy school. Funeral services were held at the Nashville Baptist Church Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev. Ira Faglier, and Rev. Jack Key, Methodist pastor. Burial followed in the Nashville Westview cemetery, handled by the Lovein Funeral Home. The Baptist choir sang, “Old Rugged Cross,” and Mrs. Ruby Turner a solo, “In the Garden”. Mrs. Jack Dix was at the organ. Active pall-bearers were Walter Thomas Lowe, Albert Folsom, Harry Sutton, Lamar Rentz, Vinson Harper and Laverne Gray. Honorary pall-bearers included Arthur Osborne, Walter Dix, Bernys Peters, Heywood Harper, S.T. Bragdon, Holmes Giddens, Cyril Futch, Dr. E.H. Brown, M.M. Johnson, Fred Beeson, Ralph Watson and T.C. Perkins. Survivors besides the wife are: two sons, William and Harold Carlton; one daughter, Mrs. Leith LeQuier of Memphis, Tenn.; and three grandchildren.
