Carter, Jr., 84, of Waycross died August 2, 2009 at his residence af after an extended illness. A native of Nashville, he was a resident of St. Augustine, FL from 1955 until 1 1984. In 1984 he moved to Waycross to make his home and become a faithful m member of First Baptist Church where he served as the Children's I Sunday S School Class teacher. He graduated from Berrien High School, received a s scholarship to Mercer University in Macon and Columbia University in New York. H He graduated Mercer University as valedictorian and president of his class. W While attending Columbia University, he entered the U.S. Navy where he served h his country faithfully during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He served the Navy a as the youngest lieutenant gunnery officer ever to enter the Navy during WWII o on the USS Buckley. He was a member of the Morocco Shrine Temple in J Jacksonville, FL. He was also employed by McCrory's as a manager for 47 years. He is the son of the late Frank L. Carter, Sr. and Ruby Lee Copper Carter Norton. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Gloria Jean Harrison Carter; two daughters, Linda Lee Carter and Barbara Jean Carter and brother, James Nor Norton. Survivors include his wife, Nina Mae Griffin Carter; son Joe Carter of St. Au Augustine, FL; daughter, Maggie Wade (Sam) of Atlanta; two grandchildren, El Elizabeth and Kady Wade; three sisters, Nina Jo Tuten (Rev. Donnie) of Wa Waycross, JoAnn Morgan (Jack) of Jacksonville and Sandra Popham of Athens; se several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. August 5 at the Music Funeral Home C Chapel in Waycross. Burial with military rites followed in Oakland Cemetery. The Victory-Keystone Sunday School Class members served as honorary pa pallbearers. Music Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
