The Adel News
	After an illness of about three years, having suffered a stroke of 
paralysis at that time, Mr. J.H. Chesnutt, one of the pioneer citizens of this 
section died at his home in this city Monday afternoon, the immediate cause of 
his death being dengue fever.  Mr. Chesnutt was born and reared in North 
Carolina and came to Berrien county when a young man.  At the time of his 
death he was seventy-seven years of age.  He engaged in school teaching when 
he came to this section and was for many years and almost up to the time his 
health failed him, a popular and successful teacher.  Many who have grown up 
around here were his pupils in the days that are gone.  Mr. Chesnutt married 
Miss Maggie Parrish, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Parrish, and 
they lived at their home just south of Adel many years, moving into town only 
a few years ago.  Mr. Chesnutt was a man of intelligence and strong 
convictions and throughout his long life he was upright and honorable in his 
dealings with his fellow man.  He had been a member of the Methodist church 
since a young man and was devoted to its interests.  He and his wife reared 
nine children, all of whom are living.  They are as follows:  Mrs. W.R. Wells, 
of Adel, Mrs. E.M. Bullock, of Nashville, Mrs. Frank Ulmer, Montezuma, Mrs. 
W.L. Dixon, of Brooks county, Mr. H. B. Chesnutt, of Rebecca, Dr. T.H. 
Chesnutt, of Coolidge, A.B. Chesnutt, of San Francisco, and Owen Chesnutt, of 
Bainbridge.  During his long illness Mr. Chesnutt was the object of the 
tenderest care by his devoted wife and children and other relatives.  He knew 
that the end of life was near and announced his readiness to go.  Mr. Chesnutt 
served the Southland faithfully during the war between the States.
	The funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church Tuesday 
afternoon Rev. J.H. Stanford officiating.  The minister read Scripture lessons 
that were favorites with the deceased, offered a fervent prayer and paid a 
tribute to the trusting faith of Mr. Chesnutt and which he had often spoken of 
to the minister.  Rev. Stanford’s talk was an eloquent and comforting one to 
the bereaved family.  The minister then called on Hon. W.G. Avera, County 
School Superintendent of Berrien county, to say a few words and he responded 
in a very feeling manner.  He told of having gone to school to Mr. Chesnutt 
fifty-two years ago, of the kindness with which he treated him then and of the 
unbroken friendship which they enjoyed for over half a century.  Mr. Avera 
paid the highest tribute to Mr. Chesnutt that is possible for one man to pay 
another when he said that he came next in his affections as a man to his own 
father and that he would have his children emulate the example and life of the 
deceased.
	The choir, composed of Mrs. L.P. Booth, pianist; Mrs. R.M. Scandrett, 
Mrs. J.N. Lastinger, Mrs. J.J. Littlefield, Mrs. Guy A. Parrish, Mrs. J.G. 
Padrick, Mrs. F.R. Booth, J.G. Padrick, J.M. Sutton, J. Mark Shaw and L.P. 
Booth sang tenderly “How Firm a Foundation” and “Jesus, Lover of My Soul” and 
Mrs. Scandrett sang very sweetly “Tired.”  At the grave “Sweetly Resting” was 
sung and Rev. Stanford concluded the services with Scripture reading and 
prayer.  The active pall bearers were chosen from those with whom Mr. Chesnutt 
had been associated as a teacher and in other capacities and were, W.G. Avera, 
of Nashville, M.S. Patten, Prof. Jason Scarboro, and T.M. Chesnutt, of Tifton, 
and J.C. Thomas and J.E. Pitts, of Adel.  The honorary pall bearers were, J.B. 
Driver, J.H. May, M.T. Shaw, A.D. Shaw, T.M. Sineath, J.M. Sutton, P.J. 
Castleberry and W.L. Harrison, of Tifton.
	The bereaved ones have the deep sympathy of many friends.
