Connell, 94, of Nashville died October 13, 2013, at his residence after a short illness with his large family by his side. He was born in Nashville on November 11, 1918. After graduating from the business school at the University of Georgia in 1940, he briefly worked as an accountant at the State Highway Department in Atlanta. When a position became available, he returned to Nashville where he worked with the post office the rest of his career. During WWII, his military training took him to West Chester, PA, where he met his future bride, Marguerite (Tootie) Monaghan. He was a self-taught musician, historian, mechanic, electrician, and woodworker. He enjoyed researching family history and repairing and building things around his house and later his children’s homes. He collected stamps, coins, and a lifetime of family photos. After he retired, he also enjoyed gardening, and visiting his children around the Southeast. He was Berrien High School’s biggest sport fan. In the 1960’s and 70’s, when his children played sports, he attended every middle school and high school game possible, In retirement, he would attend home games and away games to support his teams. He particularly loved to watch girls softball and tennis, and attended a softball game a few days before his death. He loved these kids and their parents and they loved him in return. He was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church where he played the organ. As a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Belgium and England, he was a lifetime member of VFW Post #5978, Nashville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite Connell; son, Johnny Connell; brother, Julian, Connell; sisters, Ruth Key, Hortense Dix, and Eleanor Brown. He is survived by three sons, Robert Connell, David Connell, and Joe Connell; daughter, Cathy Connell White; 11 grandchildren, Adam, Ben, Matt, Jake, and Kate Connell, Amy McKinlay, Jennifer Overholser, Kristen Garroway, Sarah Evers, Michael Howell, and John David White; 11 great-grandchildren, Gavin Greyson, Aubri, Sam, and Clay Connell, Austin Chafin, Sam and Charlie Garroway, Joanna and Joy Overholser, and Thomas McKinlay. A Rosary was said on October 15 at 6 p.m. in the chapel of Lovein Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial was held October 16 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Lovein Funeral Home with Father Freddie Angel and Deacon Ray Brown officiating. Interment followed in Westview Cemetery.
