She was born on June 3, 1922, in Berrien County to the late John A. and Vilor B Boyd Kirkland. She learned what hard work and family meant at a very early age. S She was a sharecropper farmer until age 40 and then spent more than 20 years w working with Nashville Textile, retiring in her early 60s. She was the widow of C Carlie Cook, who died in 1989. She is survived by her son, Jonathan Maltsberger of Hampton; three stepsons, Danny Cook, Lakeland, Winston Cook, Byron, John C. Cook, Durham, N.C.; one stepdaughter, Virginia Ann Herring, Adel; two sisters, Arvie Walls, Willacoochee Willacoochee, Midge Humphreys, Cocoa Beach, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Adam and Anna Louise Ambrosio. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 28, 2009, in Empire Cemetery with the Rev. Leroy Capers officiating.
