Born August 23, 1926 in Fuqua-Varina, NC to the late Samuel Phelps and Ida Mae Talley Deatherage, he served in the U. S. Army in the Pacific during WWII and was honorably discharged at age 20 with the rank of Master Sergeant. He worked with the tobacco markets in North Carolina, Maryland, Georgia and Kentucky. He owned and operated tobacco warehouses on the Bright Belt market in Georgia and the Burley market in Kentucky. He received the designation of Kentucky Colonel from the Governor of Kentucky. He was of the Baptist faith. He was married to the late Susan Sanderson Deatherage. Survivors include son, William Stanhope Deatherage of Washington, NC; daughter, Marie Wilson of Washington, NC; nine grandchildren, one great- grandchild. Funeral services were held Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Washington. Interment was in Oakdale Cemetery. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were L.E. Watson, Jimmy Parker, Randy Tingle, D.T. Dale, Roy Talley, Bob Tyndall, Jim Douglas, Billy Dawson, Barry Chesson, H.A. Swindell, Lee Foreman.
